A defect-engineering strategy is reported to enhance the photovoltaic performance of BiNbO4. Synergetic effects: enhanced light absorption, ferroelectric-like depolarization and interfacial polarization on BiNbO4 homojunction lead to an increase in the photovoltaic effects.
