Abstract

; Although Taiwanese society has transformed from agricultural to industrialized pattern, housing par- ticularly designed for three generations to live under one roof are still in high demand. Today, such a need may be found in traditional courtyard houses and modern high-density apartment complexes. Yet, studies relevant to such a housing pattern are primarily on how they ought to be planned and what problems have occurred within this kind of environment.Few ever made a quest into how these design guidelines of spatial organization can be embodied into practical designs , and how suitable they are to whoever are currently or previously a three-generation housing users via empirical tests. This study takes into consideration of these design guidelines resulted from previous studies. Instead of focusing on how such a housing should be designed, the objectives are to transfer these guidelines into arch- itectural floor plans, so that we may seek different perspectives and responses of the users regarding their spatial, social, and psychological needs. This kind of research approach is yet to be conducted. In this way,the suitability of these guidelines in modern Taiwanese society can be evaluated, criticized, justi- fied or modified. To achieve these objectives, the study reviews relevant studies which posited factors essential to such a housing design, and those which concluded design guidelines. Taking these guidelines as the basis of design, this study generated floor plans responsive to conditions, including variation of total floor areas , underlined in the basis as thorough as possible. Following this step, criteria for evaluating these floor plans are established, either by the researcher or by the users. Investigation of user evaluations, criticism, and suggestions on these designs are con- ducted consecutively. Twenty families are involved in the investigation. Their responses are discussed ; 084CYCU0221004
