This work shows, for the first time, an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) with a rare earth Europium(III) organic complex as the emitting layer, in particular Eu(BTA)3bipy - [tris(1 - (2 - benzoyl) -3,3,3 - trifluoroacetone))-bipyridine, europium(III)]. The OLED has a three layer structure configuration using TPD - [N,N' - bis(3-methylphenyl) - N,N'-diphenylbenzidine] and Alq3 - [aluminum - tris(8 - hydroxyquinoline)] as hole and electron transport layers respectively. Electroluminescence of the device shows pure 4f6 Eu3+ transitions. The driving voltage is about 14 V and a normal electrical current operation of 1 - 2 mA. The wall plug efficiency is of about 3×10-3 %.
