Abstract

The purpose of this review is to give an historical narrative overview of the development in the past 40 years of the concept of the Mediterranean diet. Since many nutritional scientists have been involved in this concept's development, we have chosen to describe the history of the Mediterranean diet with authors’ own words to record the development of one of the most important dietary and lifestyle concepts, which in 2010 was acknowledged by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humankind.
