Abstract

•Verbal information and approach-avoidance behavioural training are compared.•Threat information increases and positive information decreases fear responses.•Training approach and avoidance behaviours has limited effects on fear responses.•No significant additive effects of these pathways to fear in children were observed.•Verbal information is an important pathway in the aetiology of childhood fear.
