Abstract

A set of compacted cementitious composites based on ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and silica particles with a low water/cement ratio were manufactured. Processing variables (silica particle size, particle shape and compaction pressure) enabled 16 different experimental treatments to be manufactured to clarify and understand the relationships between pulse velocity and composite properties. Mathematical models were obtained from the response-correlation plots between the pulse velocity and bulk density, apparent porosity, oxygen permeability, compressive strength and static modulus of elasticity. The results showed that the pulse velocity is a potential tool to predict properties which are difficult to measure, thus aiding the development and design of new composites.
