Abstract

The work presented here investigates the phenomenon of coherent backscattering of light, an interference effect that is observed when light propagates in disordered media in the presence of a boundary interface. Up to this day, it is not yet well-known what is the process that allows this effect to occur without violating the law of conservation of total energy. In this thesis the processes at the origin of coherent backscattering as well as its relation to the effect of weak localization are analyzed in detail. Numerical studies of the problem will help to obtain a better understanding of these interference effects in random media and finally provide an explanation of the mechanism ensuring energy conservation.
