Abstract

On average, 610000 people die in the UK each year, but only one in five of these will die at home (Office for National Statistics (ONS), 2005). Enabling people to die at home, if they so wish and if circumstances permit, is a major focus of the Department of Health's (DoH, 2004) end-of-life strategy.
