The tweed microstructure, which appears prior to an fcc-fct martensitic transformation in Fe-Pd, was investigated by high-resolution electron microscopy. The <110 > diffuse streaking in the electron diffraction pattern was well reproduced by optical diffraction of the high-resolution electron micrograph, which confirmed the origin of the tweed structure to be static modulations of lattice planes. The high-resolution image is considered to reflect the existence of small fct embryos irregularly dispersed in the fcc matrix, which give rise to the tweedy contrast in bright-field images.
