The prevalence of osteoarthritis and the serious consequences it brings about long-term, forces medical professionals to seek other solutions to reduce negative impacts and enhance the quality of life in patients with this disease. The most typical signs of developing osteoarthritis are pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion and progressive deformity of the affected joint. Osteoarthritis pain syndrome is due to inflammation, increased intramedullary pressure, subchondral microfractures, osteophytes, muscle spasms, and flexion contracture. The main group of medicines used to treat osteoarthritis is called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In this study, a comparative pharmacoeconomic analysis method "cost-effectiveness" of two different pharmaceutical therapeutic strategies for the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis, adapted for Bulgaria.
