Abstract

This research analyzed the data from national land survey and land use change surveys.•Construction land development was situated into China's multi-track urbanization.•Construction land was concentrated along the coast, but grew fast in inland China.•Construction control and farmland protection are proved to be a double failure.•Migrants' dual land occupation is a real threat to China's sustainable development.
