Abstract

The introduction of of recycled plastics and tires as an alternative carbon source for the slag forming in the environmentally sustainable EAF steelmaking was demonstrated. The study basically focused on coke/plastic mixtures to show the benefits for combustion efficiency that can be acquired through the utilization of waste plastics, and showed that the volume ratio of the foaming slag exhibited an improvement in the process. Number of organic materials as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and different recycled tires were mixed at various ratios, and the slag foaming experiments were performed using the sessile drop technique and the horizontal furnace (HF), at the UNSW laboratories. The results of the experiment exhibited the benefits as improved slag foaming, increased furnace efficiency, increased melting rate, and reduced carbon consumption as compared to metallurgical coke and recycled rubber, in order to enhance the environmental friendly EAF steelmaking.
