Abstract

We have fabricated multiply-coated microspheres that exhibit appreciable electro-magneto-rheological responses. Under crossed electric and magnetic "elds, the microspheres form columnar crystallites with an internal structure that transforms from body-centered tetragonal to face-centered cubic as the ratio between the magnetic and the electric "elds exceeded a minimum value. The observed transition scenarios are in excellent agreement with calculations. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
