The southern border of Michigan with Indiana is historically important, and so is the survey of that border. The survey not only defined the boundary between the two states, but also played a role in Michigan receiving the Upper Peninsula. This paper traces the origins of the survey, its execution, the problems that exist today and at the time of the original survey, the attempt to retrace the border, and the instrumentation and methodology used in the original and retracement surveys.
