When we first met, we did not sound like natural collaborators: a biologist who had recently arrived from a pharmacy group in the United Kingdom and a materials scientist from a nanomaterials group in Germany. But we had a couple of things in common: We were both postdocs in a nanoparticle lab at CIC biomaGUNE, a biomaterials institute in the Basque Country in Spain, and we were both interested in expanding our horizons and growing beyond our disciplinary training. So, while the odds of us doing any productive work together seemed low at first, we were ultimately able to overcome the struggles and achieve a happy partnership, conducting truly interdisciplinary research.
