Abstract

Prolapse of pelvic organs is a common gynecological problem with a multifactorial etiology. Although it typically occurs in menopausal age, a growing number of childbearing age women undergoes pelvic surgery to correct this problem. The management of prolapse in younger women represents a challenge for reconstructive pelvic surgery. In fact, in young patients, besides prolapse correction, surgical purposes include preservation of sexual function and fertility preservation. Unfortunately most of reconstructive procedures are designed for old women and these objectives are often not considered. Although demand for reconstructive surgery for genitourinary prolapse repair is increasing, literature about this topic is insufficient to assist physicians in choosing the most appropriate procedure. Currently the choice is influenced by the preference of the patient and by the surgeon's skills.
