{The complex [Nb(C5H3[SiMe(3)](2))(2)H-3]Au-2}(+) (3), prepared from the reaction of [Nb(C(5)H(3)RR')(2)H-3] (4) with `'Au(THT)PF6" (THT = tetrahydrothiophene), shows exchange couplings much larger than the starting niobium trihydride (4). The X-ray crystal structure shows the presence of two bridging hydrides between niobium and gold; one of them is found close to the terminal hydride. The importance of these findings to the understanding of exchange couplings is discussed.
