Within the family of cerium activated (LuxGd1-x)3(AlyGa1-y)5O12 crystals the Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Ce one seems to be the most promising candidate for a modern oxide scintillator, characterized by a high light yield of ca. 42000 ph/MeV and a reasonably fast decay time of ca. 50 ns. No wonder that this material has attracted a lot of attention very quickly, resulting in several papers published in 2012-2013. As our contribution to the field we present the results of radioluminescence measurements performed at various temperatures between 10 and 325 K, as well as low temperature thermoluminescence studies. The acquired data clearly indicate that the scintillation yield of Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Ce at room temperature is not at the maximum intrinsic value characteristic of the crystal and thus there should be some room for improvement.
