For the investigation of near-stationary plasma at the Tokamak experiment ASDEX-Upgrade (AUG) in the Institute of Plasma Physics in Garching, the pulsed power and the stored energy of the experimental power supplies are being extended. In addition to the three existing flywheel-generators, new compact commercial flywheel-generators, such as used in dynamic uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, are being built [1]. Furthermore, this investment is implemented stepwise up to 2010, hence the name ‘Compact Modular Energy Storage System’ (CMESS). CMESS will be used in parallel to either of the larger flywheel-generators for the AUG plasma operation. Alternatively, it will be used in stand-alone operation mode to feed existing test beds of the additional heating systems.
