Abstract

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an impairing disorder that has a profound impact on lives of both patients and their affected relatives. The present paper reviews family involvement in OCD: systematic investigations of burden and accommodation experienced by families of patients with OCD have only been performed in recent years and results of recent studies will be presented. With regard to treatment, a review of family-focused interventions trials indicates that relatives of patients with OCD should be included in the treatment process; among the family-focused interventions proposed and studied, psychoeducation, considered for years a minor part of the treatment of mental disorders, may be better regarded as an important aspect of any comprehensive treatment program developed for patients with OCD.
