Teenagers with cancer are special patients with unique and complex needs. 1 Cancer at this age is particularly disruptive because adolescents must come to terms with a body that hurts and fails them, and seek the help of adults (parents and physicians) just when they are striving for independence. 1,2 Our challenge is to prevent cancer from interfering with every adolescent's need to become independent, develop their social relations, and make plans for the future. With this in mind, we devised a novel project in which teenagers with cancer teamed up with a well-known rock band. Together they created a song that gave the teens a chance to tell their story in music as a way to counter the traumatic effects of their disease on their lives.
