Abstract

Identify and analyze the available evidence in the literature on nursing care provided to patients with totally implantable Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). Integrative review. The search was carried out in a systematic manner in the CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed and Scopus. The sample consisted of 10 articles. From a reading of the studies included, considering the issues addressed, the following categories were identified: hemodynamic monitoring; prevention and control of bleeding from the anticoagulation regimen; infection prevention; education for patients with VAD; handling of the device by the staff and the patient; psychosocial aspects; and sensory perception and altered sleep patterns. No studies were identified, in Brazil, on nursing care in patients with implantable VAD. Among the selected studies, the authors emphasize the importance of the role of the nurse and important aspects that must be evaluated and addressed in the care of patients with this type of device. It was observed that the current knowledge is based on practical experience of nurses, such that these professionals do not receive specific training, and that no studies have been conducted that demonstrate the effectiveness of nursing interventions with these patients.
