Abstract

The aim of this contribution is to examine differences in ethics in the CEE (Central and Eastern European) and the Baltic-Nordic countries. Specifically, our research examines differences in ethical idealism and relativism in Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia – and also how age, gender, length of service, places of work and nationality are related to these. The paper first deals with the theory of ethical idealism and relativism, and then offers both country-specific notes and an analysis of empirical data from six of these countries. The study, in fact, is based on an empirical-analysis of responses related to the Ethics Position Theory (EPT) of D. R. Forsyth (1980) measuring idealism and relativism in eight different countries. Overall, our research does not aim to decide on moral issues; we are examining respondents’ answers simply in order to understand how they regard ethical relativism and idealism.
