We have measured the excitation function of quasielastic and elastic scattering, at backward angles, for a range of energies from below to above the Coulomb barrier, for the 7Li+144Sm system. Barrier distributions were exctracted from these excitation functions by a numerical method. From the theoretical analysis one concluded that the quadrupole and octupole excitations of 144Sm and the one-neutron transfer (stripping) channel are important reaction processes. Nevertheless, the agreement with the experimental results is poor. The discrepancy is attributed to the 7Li break-up channel that was not taken into account in the coupling scheme.
