Abstract

Three functionalized C60 fullerenes with a decacationic arm were synthesized and characterized.•These compounds were used to photoinactivate Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and a fungal yeast when excited by UVA or white light.•Addition of sodium azide potentiated photoinactivation especially in the absence of oxygen.•Addition of azide increased the production of reactive oxygen species.•The data suggest that type 1 electron transfer processes play a significant role in the mechanism of action.
