Abstract

The Federal District of Brazil has, currently, a small water availability per capita, indicating the possibility of arising conflicts due to water usage, requiring an adequate water resources management in the region. The objectives of this work were to locate, to determine the area, and to estimate the crop water demand of all operative central pivots in the region in the year 2002. For this inventory, it was used a scene from the LANDSAT 7 satellite, acquired on May 4th, 2002, with spatial resolution of 30 m. The center-pivot water consumption was estimated using local research data obtained from the major irrigated crops in the area. It was observed that most of the installed center pivots were concentrated in the “Preto” and “Samambaia” river basins. The total number of installed center pivots in 2002 was 104, representing an irrigated area of approximately 7,020 ha and an annual water demand of about 42 million m3. As a consequence, it is imperative that a major attention needs to be given to these water users, mainly in the referred basins, with respect to an adequate water resources management in the Federal District.
