The role of thermal fluctuations in driving the martensitic transition in shape-memory alloys is studied. Experiments show that both athermal and thermally activated kinetics can be obtained in different alloys. We establish that this depends upon the relative importance of the characteristic times associated with the driving field and nucleation.
