Abstract

Contributing to health management and food safety of poultry productions, veterinarians must maintain a high standard of competence therefore pay attention to continuing education programs and refer to official signs of recognition. In the field of Poultry Production, a veterinary specialty named " Health and Quality Management of Poultry & Rabbit Productions " was founded in 1996 in France. In agreement with the French general scheme of specialization, two levels of diploma were proposed: a Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Studies (CAVS, CEAV in French) in a first step, and a Diploma of Specialised Veterinary Studies (DSVS) leading to the title " Specialist ". The specialty is coordinated by a national board of 5 academics and 5 professionals (Chaired by Dr X. Malher), under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture. Only CAVS has been implemented so far [1]. This certificate is delivered after a postgraduate curriculum followed by a national exam and refers to a list of aimed learning issues. The curriculum comprises a 300-hour course and a 6-to-9 month training period in an approved veterinary practice. The course includes 10 one-week course units, over two years and includes conferences, visits, practical and tutorials conducted by academics, researchers, practitioners and engineers (Table 1) and supported by a distance learning platform. In the last 6 rounds (12 years) a total number of 48 veterinarians from 7 countries and 10 different veterinary colleges attended the whole program. Only 17 participants undertook the exam and 14 were graduated. According to recent national regulations, a diplomate of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Sciences (ECPVS [2]) may be recognized as a Specialist in France. In order to link the CAVS to the internship/residency program of ECPVS, a curriculum consisting of a period of one year in an approved poultry practice and a postgraduate continuing education program made of at least 5 CAVS modules has been submitted for approval by the Education Committee of ECPVS as an internship program (N. Eterradossi and J.L. Guérin, supervisors). This will allow the CAVS graduates to enter an ECPVS residency program and to gain credit for the other modules towards this residency.
