Abstract

The electronic structure of magnetic impurities in ZnS is determined by near edge x-ray absorption for the 3d transition metals Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni embedded in single crystal ZnS. By detecting emitted fluorescence photons instead of electrons it is possible to suppress the background from the host and to eliminate charging problems. The spectra exhibit considerable fine structure, which makes it possible to determine the tetrahedral crystal field 10Dq from the multiplet pattern: 10Dq=0.5 eV for Mn, 0.7 eV for Fe, 0.7 eV for Co.
