Abstract

Two new species of Deois Fennah (Hemiptera: Cercopidae), Deois (Deois) bisignata Carvalho sp. nov. and Deois (Deois) quadrisignata Teixeira sp. nov., are described and illustrated from central Brazil. Introduction Deois Fennah, 1949 (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) includes 22 valid species distributed in 4 subgenera (Acanthodeois Sakakibara, 1979; Deois s. str.; Fennahia Sakakibara, 1979; and Pandysia Fennah, 1953) in the Neotropical region (Carvalho and Webb 2005). Species of the genus can be distinguished from other cercopids in the Neotropical region by the following characters: posclypeus in antero-frontal view ovoid, rounded profile, and inflated; wing with Cu 1 abruptly widening basally; pygofer normally with two (sometimes one) posterolateral lobes (teeth), with the lower lobe developed. Aedeagus with apex usually bifid, dorsal region smooth, jagged or with a pair of processes. In this paper we add two new species from central Brazil to the genus. Material and methods The specimens studied herein are deposited in the following Institutions: The Natural History Museum, London, U.K. ((MZSP). The morphological terminology follows Fennah (1968). Measurements were taken with an eyepiece micrometer. Photographs were obtained with a Leica DFC 500 digital camera attached to the stereoscopic micro-scope Leica MZ 16 and the genitalia structures with a scanning electron microscope (MEV-Philips modelo XL 30) at the Centro de Microscopia e Microanálises (CEMM) of Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The authorship of each species is listed. The reason for this assignment is in the independent discovery of each new species. Taxonomic descriptions Deois (Deois) bisignata Carvalho sp. nov.
