Aspecies-specificcomplexmixtureofhighlystablecuticularhydrocarbons(CHCs)coverstheexternalsurfaceofallinsects.Componentscanbereadilyanalyzedbygaschromatographycoupledtomassspectrometry(GC–MS)toobtainacuticularhydrocarbonprofile,whichmaybeusedasanadditionaltoolforthetaxonomicdifferentiationofinsectspeciesandalsoforthedeterminationoftheageandsexofadultandimmatureforms.WeusedGC–MStoidentifyandquantifytheCHCsoffemaleandmaleChrysomyaputoria(Wiedemann,1818)(Diptera:Calliphoridae)fromonetofivedaysold.CHCsrangedfromC21toC35forfemalesandfromC21toC37inmales.Majorcompoundswerethesameforbothsexesandwere2-MeC28,C29:1,n-C29,15-,13-MeC29,2-MeC30,C31:1,n-C31and15-,13-MeC31.Therelativeabundanceofeachcomponent,however,variedwithage.ClusterAnalysisusingBray–CurtismeasureforabundanceshowedthatcuticularhydrocarbonprofilesareastrongandusefultoolforthedeterminationofageinadultC.putoria.
