Abstract

Question 1 Wania and McLachlan (2001) suggested that the presence of a forest canopy compartment in a dynamic multimedia model significantly alters the overall mass balance through the FFE by transferring chemical from the atmosphere to forest soils, where it is stored, thus inhibiting the potential for long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT). We agree that the FFE occurs for SVOCs with the properties suggested by Wania and McLachlan (2001) and thus that the presence of vegetation will lower the transport potential of a large proportion of the chemical. However, in this letter we further hypothesize that vegetation has the potential to enhance the air-surface exchange of SVOCs, thus increasing the LRAT potential of a significant mass fraction of chemical.
