The HIV sero positive partner has a significant role in the retention of the HIV sero negative partner in clinical trials. In addition to support of the HIV+ partner to HIV-participant in the trial, our study also demonstrated the importance of the wellness of the HIV+ partner as indicated by their viral load and CD4 count. Separation/divorce is also another major reason for the termination of participants from the study which underscores the importance of couple testing and counseling as a prerequisite in improving retention.
