Abstract

The characterization of temperature and precipitation fields over Turkey which is located at Southeastern Europe and Eastern Mediterranean presents a complicated spatial and temporal patterns. The goal of the study is the specification of temperature and precipitation fields to better understand Turkey’s climate. For this purpose, systematic techniques are needed to examine the temporal and spatial variability of precipitation and temperature, in particular, their variability related to teleconnection patterns. The climatic effects of the NAO and other teleconnection indices in the North Atlantic region have been widely studied showing it to be the important reference of climate variability in Europe. However, there are very limited efforts in explaining the links related with climate variability in Turkey. The interannual variability of precipitation and temperature collected from 238 stations in Turkey for the 1960-2013 period is investigated using teleconnection indices such as NAO, ENSO, AO and NCP. Singular spectrum analysis (SSA) which is based on the singular value decomposition of a specific matrix constructed upon the time series and allows the identification of the oscillation components is then applied to decompose the average temperature and to monthly precipitation time series associated with these patterns in Turkey during the 53 years period. A low-pass filter was applied to these datasets, which lent to pass only frequencies lower than 12 month.
