Abstract

Objectives: The main objective of this study was to determine the elastographic characteristics of the splenic parenchyma in clinically healthy dogs of various ages, using the Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) imaging, in order to establish the preliminary qualitative and quantitative standards/reference ranges for the technique. Methods: Thirty healthy dogs categorized as young (3 months-1 year old), adult (1-7 years old) and elderly (>7 years old) were used in the present study. Splenic echotexture, echogenicity, size and edges were assessed with the B-mode ultrasonography. Using the qualitative elastography, the three distinctive segments of the spleen (head, body and tail) were examined for homogeneity and the presence of deformities (i.e., bright and dark regions). Shear velocities in different splenic segments were then quantitatively evaluated. Results: All splenic segments visualized with the B-mode ultrasonography of the spleen appeared normal. Different segments of the dog’s spleen examined with the qualitative elastography were free of any detectable malformations and the images appeared as homogenous dark areas. The mean shear velocity values were 2.32 m/s for the head, 2.16 m/s for the body, and 2.25 m/s for the tail of the spleen (P = 0.40), and they did not vary among different age groups (P > 0.05). Clinical Significance: Quantitative and qualitative ARFI elastography of the spleen in clinically healthy dogs differing in age could be easily performed, and it may aid in the diagnosis and evaluation of splenic abnormalities routinely assessed in veterinary practice with the B-mode ultrasonography.
