Abstract

What are the hopes for a faster reduction in maternal and child mortality in developing countries? | The BMJ Accountability of every maternal and child case i.e. morbidity and mortality is an essential strategy for reducing maternal and newborn deaths. Nowadays, the World is facing change in developmental pattern; some countries like USA and Japan are growing so fast in all aspects, and some countries like African and south Asian nations are still struggling with basic health facilities. Therefore, now we should change our mindset about equality and place more emphasis on equity than equality. India carries the highest single share of maternal and child deaths in the world. India is a big country and has geographical and cultural variations. Here, in most of the states, Health care providers are not doing verbal autopsy in all maternal and child deaths. Still the government of India does not have any database for still births. In India underlying infrastructure to support good communication, transport and record keeping are often lacking. There is major shortage of motivated and competent staff in public health services. Therefore, accountability of health status of mother and child is an excellent initiation but prior to it the government should have an adequate infrastructure and skilled staff.
