Abstract

This paper presents the results of a pteridophyte inventory accomplished in the Espinhaço Range, in the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, Brazil. The inventory was taken based in collections obtained during field work carried out in several areas of the Espinhaço Range, Minas Gerais State, as well as in material from national and foreigner herbaria and literature data. The Espinhaço Range is the more extensive and continuous Precambrian orogenic belt of the Brazilian territory and occupies approximately 1.000 km of extension and 50 to 100 km width, with an altitudinal range of 800-2.100 m. The southern limit of the Espinhaço Range is the Serra de Ouro Branco (Minas Gerais), and the northern limit is in the area of Jacobina (Bahia). The vegetation physiognomy of the Espinhaço Range is reasonably uniform, with prevalence of Campos rupestres and associated environments. Four hundred and sixty-three species and two varieties were registered, distributed in 27 families and 88 genera, and the richest families were: Pteridaceae (66 spp.), Lomariopsidaceae (45 spp.), Polypodiaceae (40 spp.), Thelypteridaceae (33 spp.), Aspleniaceae (32 spp. and two varieties) and Schizaeaceae (29 spp.). The most representative genera are: elaphoglossum (43 spp.), thelypteris (33 spp.), asplenium (31 spp. and two varieties), anemia (25 spp.), blechnum (18 spp.) and adiantum (18 spp.). Out of 465 taxa, only 18 (3,8%) are endemic to Espinhaço Range formations. Fifteen species are recorded for the first time for the state of Minas Gerais. The richness found is not distributed evenly in the Espinhaço Range; in the area of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero occurs 380 species and two varieties; in the area of the Serra do Cipó 263 species; in the Diamantina Plateau, 215; in Serra do Cabral, only 43; in the north area of the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais (Serra de Grão Mogol and adjacent mountains), 71 species and in the Chapada Diamantina area, 115 species.
