Abstract

In reply to Pierce and Ollason's critique (see 88L/5976) of optimization techniques in general and foraging theory in particular, the logic and use of optimality approaches are discussed. Most of their argument is based on a misinterpretation of the underlying logic of optimization theory and, more generally, of basic tenets of the scientific method. Certain problems encountered when analyzing foraging behaviour are accepted. -from Authors
