Abstract

The cross section of the isovector giant dipole resonance (GDR) excited by inelastic scattering of 120-MeV {alpha} particles for 0{degree}{le}{Theta}{alpha}{prime}{le}3{degree} has been measured using the {sup 116,124}Sn({alpha},{alpha}{prime}{gamma}{sub 0}) and {sup 208}Pb({alpha},{alpha}{prime}{gamma}{sub 0}) reactions. The results are compared with distorted-wave Born-approximation calculations with a GDR form factor depending on the relative difference of proton and neutron radii ({Delta}{ital R}{sub {ital p}{ital n}}/{ital R}{sub 0}). Within the model used, the {Delta}{ital R}{sub {ital p}{ital n}}/{ital R}{sub 0} values for {sup 116}Sn, {sup 124}Sn, and {sup 208}Pb deduced from the comparison of measured and calculated cross sections are (0.7{sub {minus}0.7}{sup +2.3})%, (4.1{sub {minus}2.5}{sup +2.1})%, and (3.0{plus minus}1.3)%, respectively.
