The influence of family in the evolution of drug addictions has been object of numerous studies. Its role in decision making to start therapy, in the detoxification period, abstinence, relapse, and reintegration of drug users and/or alcoholics has been analyzed. Studies coincide in indicating that family can exert a positive or a negative influence during the whole addictive process. The aim of this article is to offer a general view of the family factors influencing drug abuse, intending to analyze the current situation of this problem which, although recognized as a serious one, many questions related to it remain unanswered, both in practice and in research fields.
