Abstract

Bioinspired superoleophobic and superhydrophobic materials have attracted the scientific community for their large range of applications. To increase this range for example for applications in oil/water separation membranes, it is important to develop materials with switchable wettability. Here, we report the formation of materials with dual-responsivity (voltage and ion exchange) by electrochemical copolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxypyrrole (EDOP) derivatives with fluorinated chains and pyridinium groups. While the fluorinated chains are necessary to reach superoleophobic properties, the pyridinium groups allows to have switchable properties by counterion exchange. Here, we show the possibility to have higher contact angles with oils than with water by controlling the percentage of each monomer, after electropolymerization, polymer reduction by voltage, and ion exchange.
