Abstract

The new compounds [Ta(η-CâHâ)(η-CâHâMe)] (3), [Nb(η-CâHâ)(η-CâHâR)(thf)][PFâ] (R = H (4), Me (4a)), [Nb(η-CâHâ)(ηCâHâMe)(PMeâ)][PFâ] (5), [Nb(η-CâHâ)(η-CâHâMe)(CO)][PFâ] (6), [K(18-crown-6)][Nb-(η-CâHâ)(η-CâHâ)] (7), and [NB(η-CâHâ)(η-CâHâMe)Me] (8) have been prepared, and an improved route to [Nb(η-CâHâ)(η-CâHâR)] (R = H (2), Me (2a)) is reported. The X-ray crystal structures of 4a and 7 have been determined. The HeI and He II photoelectron spectra of [M(η-CâHâ)(η-CâHâ)] (M = V, Nb) and 3 have been obtained and the bonding is discussed. It is considered that (η-CâHâ)-M bonding requires a contribution of three valence electrons from the metal. 43 refs., 10 figs., 6 tabs.
