Depression significantly predicts prospective emergency hospital admissions over 12 months•Severe depression increases the likelihood of emergency hospital admissions by more than two fold•Emergency admission in the previous 12 months increases the risk of admission by 3 and a half times•Having no partner, heart disease and threatening experiences also predicts emergency admissions
