CC398 is the dominant type of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in European livestock and a growing cause of human infections. Previous studies have suggested MRSA CC398 evolved from human-associated methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and is capable of rapidly readapting to human hosts while maintaining antibiotic resistance.
