Abstract

In TIMBRE’s Work Package 6 (WP6) a customisable open-source web based tool has been developed, which enables end-users to develop and evaluate their own ideas of the future uses of contaminated sites. This tool and its ‘twin’ desktop tools or modules have been applied to four TIMBRE model sites in Romania, Poland and Germany in order to provide support to these projects in the screening stage by exploring and holistically evaluating possible options with regard to future use of the sites. Five areas are included in the holistic evaluation of site development options: • Risks to humans via intake of food stemming from agricultural areas on the site, • The site’s potential for energy crops plantation, • Costs of implementing the planned option, in terms of clean-up and site preparation, • Economic benefit: market-based evaluation of the site for the planned option, and • Sustainability of the planned option within a pre-defined setting and time horizon. This report completes the documentation about the development of the web based tool and its application. Two further deliverables complement the documentation: • D6.1 gives an overview on capabilities, limitations, and data requirements of the web based tool and describes the conceptual and methodological background as well as the technical implementation of the tool. • D6.2 provides a guideline for the development of add-ons to the web based tool, including the detailed description of one exemplary add-on - both are available for download on the TIMBRE website www.timbre-project.eu
