Abstract

•Exaggerated central inflammatory responses to stressors are implicated in delirium.•We examine cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum cytokines in hip fracture patients.•We find increased CSF IL-1β in those about to develop delirium.•We find increased CSF interleukin-1 receptor antagonist in those with active delirium.
