Abstract

Such cracking develops in an intergranular form at the welding bead during the solidification time-period. The phenomenon is basically due to the insufficient ductility of the filler metal to bear the traction stresses arises during the cooling of the bead. During shrinkage, micro fissures form within the weld, which during further cooling may propagate to the surface where they then can appear as macro cracks. In this work an experimental evaluation of the influence of both pulsed and conventional welding currents on the formation of solidification cracks. The AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel was employed as the base metal. The weld was carried out by the Flux Cored Arc Welding - FCA W process in CDEP using CO2 shielding gas with four different nitrogen levels (O, 5, 10 and 15%) in order to induce different nitrogen weld metal concentrations and A WS E316LT1-1 as tubular wire. Pulsed and conventional welding currents were applied with three different levels: 150, 200 and 250 A. The Transvarestraint test, projected, constructed and calibrated, with three different tangential strain levels 1, 3 and 5% was used for the evaluation of the solidification cracks. The results showed that the total crack length (CTL) was not influenced by the increase of the level of nitrogen in metal weld and it was larger when conventional current was used, as well as, this increase of nitrogen decreased the amount of delta ferrita. With the use of larger welding currents, CTL decreased and the ferrita delta increased, independent of the type of used current. The tangential strain has a significant impact on the CTL independent of its used value
