Abstract

; When it comes to food choice, culture is considered to be a key factor. In this context, religion, as a major cultural determinant, influences the acceptance and the decisions concerning the food we eat. This research project aims to assess how religious beliefs influence food choice. In order to achieve this goal, a qualitative research method was used, resorting to a semi-structured interview to 33 participants, who were divided into 4 main groups: Practicing Catholics, Lapsed Catholics, More committed Seventh-Day Adventists, Less Committed Adventists. The data provided evidence proving that religion is an important determinant for the Seventh-Day Adventists (regardless of their level of commitment) who were part of this research. The same data has proved that religion is not so important for the Catholics who participated in this research project. Food choice determined by religion was identified, namely by the Practicing Catholics, as relevant only at specific occasions, as at the Easter celebration. Summing up, even though our participants, both Catholics and Seventh-Day Adventists, state that religion has a positive impact on their lives, for the Seventh-Day Adventist participants their decisions concerning food are influenced by their religious beliefs, being their food choice a revelation of their own religiosity.
