Using ERPsim in an academic context requires technical and instructional training. The current workshop based training model presents some disadvantages and is not best suited to reach a global audience. On the other hand, the virtual and online alternatives also present some shortcomings, such as the lack of hands-on exercises. From May 5, 2015 to June 23, 2015 we ran a massive open online course " Facilitating ERPsim: Running Successful Business Simulation Games with ERPsim " in partnership with SAP on the openSAP platform. A companion website provided a set of weekly exercises and guided tutorials to emulate hands-on SAP system usage. Virtual 1-on-1 coaching sessions were offered to faculty after completing the openSAP online course. We discuss the factors that might explain differences in the completion and success rates for the various components of this training protocol, as well as our own learning from the experience.
