Abstract

Diterpenoids, triterpenoids, Saponins, flavonoids, isoflavonoids and lignans are classes of secondary metabolites found in natural sources as vegetables. Species of genera Euphorbia, Helianthemum, Thymelaea, Astragalus, Erinacea and Atractylis growing in Aures region of Algeria were chemically investigated by using chromatographic techniques such as VLC, CC, TLC and HPLC. Structures of the isolated bioactive compounds were determined mainly by 1-D (1 H, 13 C and DEPT) and 2-D NMR (COSY, HSQC, TOCSY, HMBC, NOESY, ROESY), UV, IR, X-Ray, mass spectrometry HR-ESI-MS, optical rotation and comparison with literature data. These compounds were identified as terpenoids, lignans, saponins, flavonoids, coumarins and isoflavonoids. In the biological part of this study, we have evaluated the antioxidant activity of the crude extract (EtOAc) and some isolated compounds of the species Erinacea anthyllis by two different methods: DPPH radical scavenging and ferric reducing power. The EtOAc and n-butanol extracts of the species Euphorbia bupleoroides, Astragalus depressus and Thymelaea microphylla were tested against three bacterial strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, by the diffusion method on agar medium. The obtained results indicate that some species could be used as a source of antibacterial and anti-oxidant activities.
